Point of Order: Professor is not a temporary title, not borrowed, not voted for, Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
That assertion reflects a grave misunderstanding of what it means to attain such a scholarly status, a status earned through years of rigorous research, teaching, mentorship, and contribution to knowledge….
An open letter by Ogunade Adebola Oluwakayode Kdivine
I watched with deep disappointment and concern your conduct during a recent screening exercise. Your remarks not only undermined a reputable class of academics but also inadvertently dragged the standards of our educational system to an undeserved low.
It is with a heavy heart that I question your position regarding when and how a Professor should be recognized.
To suggest that a Professor is only to be addressed as such within the confines of an academic environment is not only inaccurate but profoundly disrespectful.
That assertion reflects a grave misunderstanding of what it means to attain such a scholarly status, a status earned through years of rigorous research, teaching, mentorship, and contribution to knowledge.
If we are to follow your logic, one might also question why you continue to be addressed as “Comrade” long after your tenure as the NLC Chairman has ended. Similarly, why do former lawmakers and public officials continue to bear titles such as “Senator,” “Honourable,” or “Your Excellency” long after leaving office?

Dear Senator Oshiomhole, your comments were not just demeaning, they embody the disregard that many in the political class seem to hold toward the academic and intellectual community. Statements like yours only serve to deepen the already widening gulf between political leadership and educational advancement in Nigeria.
As a young academic and passionate advocate for education and national development, I condemn in absolute terms your utterances and respectfully call on you to tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian academic community, particularly to the Professor you attempted to diminish by questioning his right to bear his title proudly.
Let us remember: titles like “Professor” are earned, not inherited, or voted for, and they remain valid irrespective of time or location, just as the titles conferred on political leaders continue long after their official tenure.
Respectfully,
