Gov. Buni’s Next Two Years in Office
By Yusuf Ali
On May 29, 2025, His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, COMN, marked two years into his second term, bringing his total time in office as Governor of Yobe State to six years.
While his landmark achievements and milestones are well-documented and evident across the state, the next two years of his administration provide an opportunity to anticipate further socioeconomic and sociopolitical growth under his leadership.
In Nigeria, the latter years of an administration are often dominated by political maneuvering. However, Governor Buni has consistently demonstrated the wisdom of separating governance from political distractions.
Even during the 2023 general elections, he remained steadfast in advancing Yobe’s development agenda—a hallmark of his pragmatic and focused approach to governance.
Dr. Edgar Amos Sunday once described a visionary leader as one who delivers beyond expectations while transforming the landscape for future generations. This definition aptly captures Governor Buni’s administration.
Through inclusive governance, strategic decision-making, and transformative policies, he has reshaped Yobe’s political and developmental trajectory.
The next two years of Governor Buni’s administration promise sustained growth and development across various sectors as part of the administration’s Continuity, Consolidation and Innovation agenda.
In the areas of health, Governor Buni’s commitment to healthcare is exemplified by his pledge to establish one functional Primary Healthcare Center in each of the 178 political wards of the state.
To date, 142 have been completed, and the remaining will follow suit. The Yobe State University Teaching Hospital—poised to offer world-class medical services with advanced diagnostic tools—is another significant project nearing completion.
Education remains a cornerstone of his agenda. The construction and renovation of schools have been accompanied by increased investment in teacher training and curriculum improvements. These initiatives are geared toward ensuring Yobe remains a leader in quality education.
Ongoing infrastructure projects, including the iconic Damaturu Flyover and underpass and numerous road projects, are on track for completion. Urban and rural road networks will see further expansion, enhancing connectivity and commerce.
Other projects, such as the Damaturu Mega Motor Park, construction of drainage networks, and the remodelling of Damaturu city Roundabouts, are also set for prioritization.
Buni’s administration has championed an agricultural revolution, with expanded irrigation farming and the provision of subsidized fertilizers and inputs to farmers. These efforts will continue, ensuring food security and economic empowerment.
Governor Buni’s focus on empowering women and youth will be deepened through initiatives that create opportunities for self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
Proactive measures to address security challenges, including collaboration with security agencies and community engagement, have restored relative peace and stability to Yobe State. Security will remain a cornerstone of his administration, ensuring a safe environment for continued development.
As the 2027 elections approach, political realignments are inevitable. Yet, true to form, Governor Buni is expected to maintain his calm and calculated approach to governance. His ability to remain focused amidst political distractions has become a defining trait, enabling him to deliver tangible results where others might falter.
Governor Buni understands that true development is not about theatrics but about impactful results. While others may engage in pre-election positioning, his administration will continue prioritizing projects that directly benefit the people of Yobe State.
The next two years offer an opportunity for Governor Buni to solidify his legacy as a transformational leader. His administration’s focus on healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, and security will ensure that the lives of Yobe’s citizens are improved in meaningful and lasting ways.
Governor Buni’s leadership will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark, resonating long after his tenure concludes.
