NMA presents #200,000 to UNIMAID best medical student

The Nigerian Medical Association, Borno State Branch has presented the sum of N200,000 naira to the best graduating Medical student of the University of Maiduguri
The cheque was presented during the school’s 49th Attestation Ceremony which held at the Convocation Square, University of Maiduguri recently.
The prize presentation marked a historic moment as the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, formally handed over the cheque to the awardee, accompanied by the NMA Borno State Chairman, Dr. El-Yakub Yakubu Mohammed, and the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Professor Mohammed Bukar.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, emphasized the high standards and tradition of excellence maintained by the College of Medical Sciences.
“The College of Medical Sciences has continued to uphold the highest standards in medical education, and today’s attestation ceremony is a reflection of that,” he said.
He used the opportunity to announce a major development, saying “The Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has approved an investment of ₦110 billion to upgrade medical education across 18 universities in Nigeria, with the University of Maiduguri set to benefit with about ₦4 billion from this fund,”
On his part, the Provost, Professor Mohammed Bukar, congratulated the graduating students and offered a note of wisdom as they step into professional practice.
“Remember, a great physician is not the one who merely treats the disease but the one who treats the person who has the disease,” he advised
He urged them to embody compassion, empathy, and excellence in their future careers.
In his remarks, the NMA Borno State Chairman, Dr. El-Yakub Yakubu Mohammed, stressed the importance of encouraging and rewarding excellence among young doctors.
“The future of healthcare in Borno and Nigeria lies in the hands of these young, brilliant minds. As an association, we are committed to recognizing excellence and inspiring continuous professional growth,” he said.
Dr. El-Yakub also announced that NMA Borno has instituted a similar prize for the Best Graduating Dental Student, which will be presented during the Dental Attestation Ceremony.
The event was attended by academic staff, medical professionals, students, and proud family members who witnessed the celebration of dedication, discipline, and hard work.
