Breaking: Tinubu Approves N80Billion For Immediate Reconstruction Of Alau Dam
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an allocation of N80 billion for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Alau Dam in Borno State, which collapsed last year and led to significant flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, after the second Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“The President gave approval of N80 billion for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Alau Dam in Borno State, and this is awaiting ratification of FEC while due processes are being observed,” Utsev said.
The project, set to begin in February and to be completed within 24 months, aims to prevent flooding in Borno State.
The Borno State government is partnering with the federal government to kickstart the project, with the first component set to be established between February and July 2025.
“The Borno State government is working together to kickstart the project between now and July 2025. The first component will be established to ensure flooding does not occur in Borno State in 2025,” Utsev added.
Utsev revealed that the committee constituted to evaluate dams in Nigeria considered the Alau Dam as the most critical and immediate for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
The committee assessed 35 dams after its inauguration on October 2, 2024.
