NANS Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to FG Over Deadly Numan-Jalingo Road”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described the Numan to Jalingo road as a death trap and gave the federal government a 14-day ultimatum to reconstruct the road.
Mr. Lucky Emonefe, National President of NANS, gave the ultimatum on Saturday in Jalingo during the inauguration ceremony of the North East Zonal Executive Council of the union and warned if the government fails to start work on the road, they will stage a mass protest.Â
The President said that the union would relocate its national secretariat from Abuja to the Northeast if the federal government fails to commence work on the road after the expiration of the ultimatum.
He described the road as one of the worst roads in the country, stating that the deplorable situation of the road was a threat to the lives of Nigerians, including students.
“The national association of Nigerian students has declared a state of emergency on Jalingo Numan road. The road is one of the worst roads in Nigeria and is a death trap to Nigerians, especially students, especially in the North East geopolitical zone.”
Emonefe, however, called on the Federal Ministry of Works to order the contractor handling the reconstruction of the road to immediately return to the site and commence work in order to save the lives of Nigerians plying the road.
The president commended Gov. Agbu Kefas of Taraba for his student-friendly policies in the state and described the governor as the most education-friendly governor in Nigeria.
“We are happy over the policies of uplifting the standard of education introduced by the Taraba State governor and for the implementation of the free education policy as well as a 50% slash in tuition for tertiary institutions in the state.
“We advised other governors to emulate the good work Governor Agbu Kefas is doing, especially in the education sector, which is key to the development of any society,” the NANS President said.
Earlier in his address, Mr. Umar Afkawa, the newly sworn-in coordinator of the NANS in the Northeast, said his vision was to improve the welfare of students in the zone.
