The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced a three-day training workshop for journalists and civil society organisations (CSOs) on non-kinetic approaches to insurgency and terrorism across the North-East region and the nation in general.
Â
Speaking at the opening session in Maiduguri, NEDC Managing Director Muhammad Alkali explained the Commission’s dedication to addressing the root causes of conflict through its North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan.
Â
Alkali said that the workshop is meant to equip participants with the skills needed to foster peacebuilding and change the negative narratives with a view to drive development in the conflict-affected region.
Â
He called for stronger collaboration between the media, CSOs, and the NEDC to sustain ongoing rebuilding efforts and promote harmonious coexistence.
Â
In his remarks, NEDC’s Head of Corporate Services, Abba Musa, commended journalists and CSOs for their contributions to stabilising the region. Represented by Ms. Naomi Abwaku, he described the workshop as a significant initiative to enhance their capacity and amplify the impact of their work.
Â
On his part, Ahmed Shehu, Chairperson of the North-East Civil Society Organisations, and Aminu Mallum of the Network of Adamawa NGOs underscored the workshop’s role in strengthening non-violent responses to insurgency and fostering sustainable development.Â
Â
He commended the NEDC for their foresight and prioritising peacebuilding among the development strides towards restoration of peace in the subregion.Â
Â
The training featured notable speakers, including Prof. Umar Pate, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere; Dr. Nathaniel Danjibo of the University of Ibadan; and Prof. Muazu Abubakar of the University of Maiduguri.
