Flood: Borno govt urges FG to increase special funds
The Borno State government appealed to the Federal Government for increased special intervention to address the state’s urgent need for infrastructure development.
The State Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, stated while receiving a delegation from the House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Fund led by Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji in Maiduguri yesterday.
He said such support would not only aid recovery efforts but also help build resilience against future disasters, adding that the visit by the committee underscores the importance of assessing the ecological challenges faced by Borno and ensuring a coordinated response to mitigate the long-term effects of the floods.
Kadafur highlighted the devastating impact of the September floods, which destroyed about 75% of Maiduguri Metropolis and its environs, describing the extent of the damage and emphasising the destruction of critical infrastructure and the displacement of thousands of residents.
The Deputy Governor acknowledged that these donations have played a crucial role in providing immediate relief and rebuilding hope among flood victims and further urged all stakeholders to continue their support, emphasising the need for sustained efforts to rebuild damaged infrastructure and enhance the state’s resilience to future disasters.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Ecological Fund, Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, stated that their visit to Borno State was to assess firsthand the extent of devastation caused by the recent flood disaster.
According to the committee, they were in the state to assess the level of devastation caused by the September flood disaster to ensure that the kind of intervention they will recommend is based on the level and magnitude of the flood disaster.
Hon. Aminu assured the state government of the committee’s commitment to addressing the challenges and, however, promised to make comprehensive recommendations to the Federal Government and relevant authorities to ensure that adequate support and interventions are provided to help the state recover and prevent future occurrences.
He said the committee will ensure that they add something tangible and believe that the kind of intervention that they will recommend is based on the level of devastation they have seen in the state.
He further noted that the funds to be allocated for flood recovery and mitigation would be based on the committee’s recommendations, which are informed by their on-ground assessments.
He reassured the Borno State Government of their commitment to ensuring equitable and impactful intervention to address the devastation caused by the floods.
