Boat Capsizes on Benue River, Over 20 Feared Dead
At least 20 people, primarily women and children, are feared dead after a boat capsized on the River Benue near Ocholonya in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, as the victims were returning to Doma, Nasarawa State, after attending a market in Ocholonya.
Eyewitnesses reported that the wooden boat, overloaded with traders, capsized in the turbulent waters of the river.
Local divers have recovered several bodies, but the exact death toll remains uncertain.
Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.
He stated that efforts are underway to coordinate with Nasarawa State officials to provide support to the affected families.
The Nigerian Navy has been contacted to assist with the ongoing rescue operation. However, attempts to reach the Benue State Police Command spokesperson for further details have been unsuccessful at the time of press.
